HEIDI THOMAS, D.V.M. 

Heidi Thomas was born and raised in Madison, Connecticut in an avid horse family. She rode and showed horses throughout high school and college. She received her Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana where she was a member of the equestrian team and Delta Delta Delta National Sorority. During the summer breaks, when back home in Connecticut, she worked as a veterinary technician.  

Dr. Thomas graduated in 1995 from Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts where she worked as a technician in the large animal hospital while attending school. During her senior year, she did various externships in equine sports medicine in California, Kentucky and Florida. After graduation, she headed to South Florida where she practiced at Calder Race Course and also worked on many performance horses at local farms. 

In 2003, Dr. Thomas moved to Arizona to be closer to her father who was living in Phoenix. While in Arizona, Dr. Thomas was able to broaden her clientele to include rope horses, barrel-racing horses, as well as Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racehorses. She was the track veterinarian at Yavapai Downs during the summer of 2006. Before leaving Phoenix, she was practicing at Turf Paradise Race Track. Dr. Thomas joined Teigland, Franklin & Brokken in March 2008, and although she misses her clients, patients and friends in Phoenix, she is happy to be back “home” at Calder. 

Dr. Thomas is a member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, American Veterinary Medical Association, Florida Veterinary Medical Association and Arizona Veterinary Medical Association. Her special interests include lameness and rehabilitation. She has personally rehabilitated several racehorses and placed them in loving homes. When not working, she can usually be found horseback riding, shopping or spending time at the beach.
